Movie Stars, Fantasy Femmes & Glamour Girls

sts

Yesterday, I tweeted about the fabulous-looking new book Styling the Stars: Lost Treasures from the 20th Century-Fox Archives by Angela Cartwright and also included a link to her promo video. I wished her well with it, but said I would only be getting it if there were photos of my fave 60s gals Carol Lynley, Pamela Tiffin, or Julie Newmar. Angela’s co-author Tom McLaren, who I omitted from the tweet due to space constraints (sorry Tom!), responded and said there are 2 full pages photos of Carol and 3 of Julie. He thinks they have never been published before. 2 out of 3 is not bad. Sad no Pamela Tiffin. Hoping Diane Baker and Jill St. John did not make the cut either, meow! Do know per Tom there are photos of Barbara Eden, Farrah Fawcett plus Raquel Welch, Ann-Margret, Sandra Dee, Tuesday Weld, etc.

The book is now on my Must Have list and just from the video you know it would make a wonderful coffee table gift book for the movie lover in your life. And I think Fantasy Femmes of Sixties Cinema or Glamour Girls of Sixties Hollywood would make a wonderful companion piece.

  1. Yowsir, Yowsir, Yowsir! I hadn’t heard of this book before. The price is a bit scary, so I think I’ll go to my local Barnes & Nobel store and view the book first. Hopefully, this won’t be one of those deals where the book is “sealed” so that one can’t see the pages without buying it.

I wonder if all the ladies mainly worked for 20th Century-Fox?

I hope there are photos of Angela herself in there (probably from LOST IN SPACE, no?). She and Pamela Franklin were early crushes of mine. In fact, Pamela Franklin also appeared in Fox films, such as PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE, THE THIRD SECRET, and THE NANNY (Hammer pick-up), so hopefully there are pictures of Pamela too.

Thanks for tipping us off about this book!

  2. I found the same thing at B&N. When a book is priced much higher than the norm, I tend to be offended when they won’t allow me to take a peek at the contents. I suspect that they won’t be getting my money for this book.

I am assuming that the sealing is done by the publisher, and not by B&N, but I don’t know that for sure. I find it to be a counterproductive method of selling expensive books.

Since Cary Grant is shown on the back cover, I guess that all decades will be covered, and that men will be shown as well as women. I had been hoping that the book would be ALL females, and limited to the 60’s and 70’s.

Maybe used copies will show up eventually, or perhaps it will reprinted in paperback someday? I’d still like to check out the content, but I doubt that I’ll purchase this sealed hardback edition.

    • In their promo video they show many photos. Based on the actresses co-author Tom told me seems 50s/60s are highlighted. Actors are included but know there are pics of Raquel Welch, Ann-Margret, Sandra Dee, Tuesday Weld, Barbara Eden, Carol Lynley, Julie Newmar and unfortunately Diane Baker.

  3. A bit off the subject, but Olive Films has just announced new Blu-ray discs of BEACH BLANKET BINGO and MUSCLE BEACH PARTY, due on Feb. 17th. This has been announced at the Classic Flix site.
