SCREEN TESTING!

Wonderful clips of some screen tests. Most interesting to me is Raquel Welch’s test with James Coburn for Our Man Flint a role she lost to Israeli actress Gila Golan. Also the brief clip of Raquel testing for the role of the ill-fated Jennifer in Valley of the Dolls–she took the blue pills. Raquel was offered the role, but turned it down.

One of the actresses seen testing for Jennifer was former Playboy Playmate Donna Michelle who played Animal in Beach Blanket Bingo.

Jean Hale who had just co-starred with James Coburn in In Like Flint also turned down Jennifer because of the semi-nudity. She opted for the violence in The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre instead.

Karen Jensen craved the role of Jennifer and thought she had it. She remarked in Fantasy Femmes of Sixties Hollywood, “When you go on interviews, sometimes you get the sense if they like you or don’t.  I really sensed that either producer David Weisbart or director Mark Robson—I can’t remember which—took a real liking to me and was pulling for me to get the part.  I went back a couple of times and I thought I had a real chance for it.”

Sharon Tate is ultimately cast and gives a touching, understated performance as the vulnerable Jennifer. And she gets to utter that infamous unPC line, “You now how bitchy fags can be!”

SPRINGTIME!

What better way to celebrate a gorgeous spring day than watching a clip of Pamela Tiffin lip-synching Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beautiful song “It Might As Well Be Spring” from the 1962 version of State Fair? The lovely cult actress and her films from Hollywood to Rome will be the subject of my next book.

WHAT A TRAMP!

The trashy Claudelle Inglish (1961) starring Fantasy Femme Diane McBain as the Southern vixen is getting a rare airing on Turner Classic Movies Friday night June 1 at midnight. Based on a novel by Erskine Caldwell, it is the story of a Southern farm girl, who after getting jilted by fiancee Chad Everett, turns into the town bad girl using men until she meets a bad end.

A Warner Bros. contract player, Diane McBain beat out Connie Stevens, Shirley Knight and others to get this much coveted role. This was released after McBain played an unhappy drunken socialite in Parrish opposite Troy Donahue. She was so good in both movies that they typed her as the bad girl in many films to come despite her comedic turn for two seasons on ABC-TV’s Surfside 6.

PLENTY OF DRAMA

Fantasy Femme Lana Wood (best known as Bond Girl Plenty O’Toole in Diamonds Are Forever) was rushed to the hospital a few days ago near death. Happy to report she is home now and doing fine. She had a terrible allergic reaction to an ingredient in…Frosted Mini-Wheats! And I thought only the sugar in those cereals were harmful. Click here to read more.
