GOOD HEAVENS!

Mother Dolores Hart will be signing autographs at the upcoming Chiller Theatre Show this October in New Jersey reuniting with her Where the Boys Are co-star Connie Francis. All proceeds go to support her convent.

In 1963, they stopped asking Dolores Hart where the boys are anymore when she quit acting to become a nun.  Before she took her vows, this talented brunette played Elvis Presley’s sweet love interest in Loving You (1957) and King Creole (1958).  She was a perfect contrast to the career-driven publicity agent Lizabeth Scott in the former and seductive gun moll Carolyn Jones in the latter.  And it has been written that she and Elvis hit it off splendidly.  Hart then was top billed as one of the legions of college kids to descend on Fort Lauderdale during spring break in the first official beach movie of the sixties Where the Boys Are (1960).  She played the sensible one who her friends (Yvette Mimieux, Paula Prentiss, and Connie Francis) go to for advice.  Theatre owners took notice and voted her a Star of Tomorrow in 1961.  After playing a golddigging flight attendant in Come Fly with Me (1963), Dolores Hart became Sister Judith and entered the Abbey of Regina Laudis (a cloistered order) in Connecticut.  Today she is known as Mother Dolores and to raise money for their convent, she and her fellow nuns recorded a CD of chant music in 1998.  I wrote to her for an interview back then and she wrote back, “Thank you so much for showing interest in my life in films.  Your thought to include me is appreciated.  However, I trust you will understand that it is not possible for me to participate.” I guess now she can since she is making hte autograph convention circuit.

  1. Well, maybe Mother Dolores had a recent vision that convinced her to hit the convention circuit.

I have had the old DVD of WHERE THE BOYS ARE in my collection for years, but only recently discovered that it has an audio commentary track with Paula Prentiss, and a retrospective featurette with Prentiss and Connie Francis. I should watch those supplements someday.
